Everybody wants to escape the vicious circle of negative emotions but still gets stuck with them for the most prolonged period. Once you can understand why any feeling becomes a strong emotion, you can navigate through the series of emotions you fall into.
The simple formula stated in the book, ‘Master Your Emotions’ by Thibaut Meurisse, can give one a better stance while going through challenging emotions.
Interpretation: Reality has no power unless you give some meaning to it. Simply put, it’s all about how you perceive a specific situation. The same incident can be an eye-opener to someone or the most significant cause of misery to someone else. Your mental makeup has a vital role to play here.
Remember, if you are conditioned in a certain way, it doesn’t mean you cannot unlearn those areas. You always have the power of choice, which can help rewire your brain.
Identification: The more you identify yourself with the specific thought, the more difficult it gets to separate yourself from the situation or the emotion. Remember, you are not an emotion; you are just feeling the emotion. Keeping in mind the temporary nature of emotions can help to seek stability amidst the chaos.
Repetition: When you like a song, you feel like listening to it repeatedly, and you are left with a more profound impression of that song in your mind. Similarly, when you keep playing the same CD in your head, feeling the same pattern, and associating yourself with the same thoughts repeatedly, you have a superior version of the incident in your head, which can be accessed at any time in life.
Strong Emotion: When such emotion has become a part of identity, you will be easily triggered when a related thought or event occurs. Remember, where the focus goes, the energy flows, and when more the focus goes, the more thoughts align on the same line. Thoughts generate emotions, and emotions then dictate your actions and shape your reality.
Make a conscious choice to let go of negative emotions whenever you feel them. It’s a gradual process, so be patient with yourself while accepting and healing along the journey.
